Indias Small Holder Dairying In Liberalized Era

Abstract :

India is largest milk producing country in the world with production of 121.8 million tonnes of milk in 2010–11. India’s dairy industry is characterized as small holder dairying, totally different from other large milk producing countries of the world. Indian dairy industry was a protected sector till 1991. In 1991, India adopted liberalization policy. The dairy industry was delicensed in 1991. India is member of World Trade Organization (WTO). Both this changes has significant influence on Indian dairy sector. This paper highlights the growth of Indian dairy industry, strengths–weaknesses–opportunities and threats of Indian small holder dairy industry, challenges faced by Indian dairy industry in liberalized era and strategies to overcome challenges.
