Rachita Sambyal
Abstract :
Opening up of FDI in multi–and retail in India is expected to reap benefits in the medium to long–term by improving balance sheet & liquidity profile of cash–starved retailers with aggressive expansion plans , supply chain & back–end infrastructure while reducing margins for middlemen through direct sourcing from farmers , arrest inflationary pressures through increased supplies facilitated by improved productivity of farmers, reduction of agri–waste, employment generation opportunities and better experience for Indian consumers in the long–run. To optimize national interest, it is suggested to have a caliated approach for introducing FDI in the retail sector in terms of the percentage and minimum capitalization requirements, distinction in approach for food & non–food sector, widening the scope to include other sectors such as non–banking financial company & telecom , utilization of 50% of the FDI for back end infrastructure and imposing a requirement to purchase 30% of the goods from SMEs.
