CORRELATION OF BODY MASS INDEX WITH MENSTRUAL PROFILE IN MEDICAL STUDENTS IN PUNE

Abstract :

<p>&nbsp;<b><span lang="EN-IN" style="font-size:12.0pt;line-height:200%;font-family:&#10;&quot;Times New Roman&quot;,serif">OBJECTIVE</span></b><span lang="EN-IN" style="font-size: 12pt; line-height: 200%; font-family: &quot;Times New Roman&quot;, serif;">:&nbsp; The study aims at finding the effect of BMI on the menstrual profile of women. The data was collected from 103 medical students via structured questionnaires and interviews after obtaining informed written consent. <o:p></o:p></span></p> <p class="MsoNormal" style="line-height:200%"><b><span lang="EN-IN" style="font-size:12.0pt;line-height:200%;font-family:&#10;&quot;Times New Roman&quot;,serif">RESULTS</span></b><span lang="EN-IN" style="font-size:&#10;12.0pt;line-height:200%;font-family:&quot;Times New Roman&quot;,serif">: 50% and 25% obese candidates showed decreased amount of blood loss and irregularity of menstrual cycle. Overweight participants showed prevalence of increased cycle length, amount of blood loss and irregularity as high as 16.7%, 11.1% and 33.3% respectively. Decreased cycle length and amount of blood loss was seen in 8.3% and 41.7% of underweight participants.<o:p></o:p></span></p> <p class="MsoNormal" style="line-height:200%"><b><span lang="EN-IN" style="font-size:12.0pt;line-height:200%;font-family:&#10;&quot;Times New Roman&quot;,serif">CONCLUSION</span></b><span lang="EN-IN" style="font-size:12.0pt;line-height:200%;font-family:&quot;Times New Roman&quot;,serif">: There was a positive correlation between body mass index and menstrual profile related to duration of menstruation, amount of blood loss, cycle length, regularity of menstrual cycle &amp; premenstrual syndrome symptoms.<o:p></o:p></span></p>
