Pattern of lymphadenopathies in a tertiary care hospital in Jammu, India

Abstract :

<p>&nbsp;<b><span style="font-size:18.0pt;line-height:200%;font-family:&quot;Times New Roman&quot;,serif">Background:</span></b></p> <p class="MsoNormal" style="line-height:200%"><span style="font-size:18.0pt;&#10;line-height:200%;font-family:&quot;Times New Roman&quot;,serif">Palpable&nbsp; lymph nodes are commonly encountered in clinical practice. It is a manifestation of both benign&nbsp; and malignant diseases. Histopathology of lymph nodes is the &ldquo;gold standard&rdquo; for accurate evaluation of both non neoplastic &amp; neoplastic lesions of the lymph node.<o:p></o:p></span></p> <p class="MsoNormal" style="line-height:200%"><b><span style="font-size:18.0pt;line-height:200%;font-family:&quot;Times New Roman&quot;,serif">Material &amp; Methods</span></b><span style="font-size:18.0pt;line-height:200%;&#10;font-family:&quot;Times New Roman&quot;,serif">: <o:p></o:p></span></p> <p class="MsoNormal" style="line-height:200%"><span style="font-size:18.0pt;&#10;line-height:200%;font-family:&quot;Times New Roman&quot;,serif">This is a retrosceptive observational study, which was done in the Post Graduate Department of Patholgy, GMC Jammu, over a period of three years, from 1<sup>st</sup> January 2014 to 31<sup>st</sup> December 2016. A total of 94 cases of lymph node biopsies&nbsp; were retrived from the&nbsp; archives of Histopathogy section of Department of Pathology, GMC Jammu. The slides of lymph node biopsies were studied and classified into various neoplastic and non neoplastic lesions of lymph nodes. <o:p></o:p></span></p> <p class="MsoNormal" style="line-height:200%"><b><span style="font-size:18.0pt;line-height:200%;font-family:&quot;Times New Roman&quot;,serif">Results: O</span></b><span style="font-size:18.0pt;line-height:200%;font-family:&quot;Times New Roman&quot;,serif">ut of the total<b> </b>94 cases, 34 cases( 36.2%)were tubercular lymphadenitis, &nbsp;20(21.3%) were metastatic tumours followed by&nbsp; 16 cases(17.1%) of&nbsp; Non Hodgkin Lymphoma(NHL),&nbsp; 12 cases(12.7%) each of Hodgkinn lymphoma( HL )&amp; chronic non specific lympadenitis. Cervical lymph node was the most frequently biopsied lymph node(40.4%). Males were more frequently involved with the male to female ratio being 1.1:1.&nbsp; The age range was 1-82 years with the mean age of 35years. Maximum number of cases were in the 3<sup>rd</sup> and 5<sup>th</sup> decade.&nbsp; <o:p></o:p></span></p> <p class="MsoNormal" style="line-height:200%"><b><span style="font-size:18.0pt;line-height:200%;font-family:&quot;Times New Roman&quot;,serif">Conclusion: </span></b><span style="font-size:18.0pt;line-height:200%;font-family:&quot;Times New Roman&quot;,serif">Tuberculosis was the most common cause of lymphadenopathy in a developing country like ours.<o:p></o:p></span></p>
