Assessing the risk factors leading to Obstructive Sleep Apnea in adults and their correlation with its severity in tertiary care setting.

Abstract :
<p> <u style="font-size: 12px;"><span lang="EN-IN">Introduction</span></u><span lang="EN-IN" style="font-size: 12px;"> : Obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) has strong correlation with specific risk factors associated with the disease.</span></p> <p class="MsoNormal"><u><span lang="EN-IN">Aim</span></u><span lang="EN-IN"> : To study the risk factors associated with OSA and their correlation with severity of disease.<o:p></o:p></span></p> <p class="MsoNormal"><u><span lang="EN-IN">Materials and methods</span></u><span lang="EN-IN"> : <o:p></o:p></span></p> <p class="MsoNormal">A tertiary care hospital based cross sectional descriptive study was carried out. Demographic characteristics, weight, height and neck circumference were measured. <span lang="EN-IN">Comparison between groups was performed with the Student <i>t </i>test for continuous variables and the Pearson Chi Square test for discrete variables. Linear correlation was applied for continuous variables for comparison with AHI values.<o:p></o:p></span></p> <p class="MsoNormal"><u><span lang="EN-IN">Results</span></u><span lang="EN-IN"> :<o:p></o:p></span></p> <p class="MsoNormal"><span lang="EN-IN">4 (13.3%), 10 (33.3%) and 16 (53.3%) percent subjects, respectively, had mild, moderate and severe SDB. Co-relation of male gender with AHI was found statistically significant (p value 0.029) and that of BMI (p value 0.001) was highly significant.</span>Neck circumference > 40 cms increased the risk of severe disease (AHI>30/hr) by 20 times as compared to mild –moderate disease(AHI<30/hr).<span lang="EN-IN"><o:p></o:p></span></p> <p class="MsoNormal"><u><span lang="EN-IN">Conclusion :<o:p></o:p></span></u></p> <p class="MsoNormal">BMI, male gender, neck circumference have stood out as the strongest risk factors for severe sleep disordered eathing.<span lang="EN-IN"><o:p></o:p></span></p> <p class="MsoNormal" style="line-height:200%"><u><span style="font-size:12.0pt; line-height:200%;font-family:"Arial",sans-serif;mso-ansi-language:EN-US"> </span></u></p>
