Acute Methyl Alcohol Poisoning “The Blind Drunk” – A Review

Abstract :

Methyl alcohol is a very common adulterant in illicit liquors and yet intoxication and its dangers are not always easily diagnosed and recognized. The need for early diagnosis is very important because a specific antidote is available to us to minimize danger of blindness, and other damage and even to prevent death. This study is based on the ‘Hooch Tragedy’ occurred in the city of Ahmedabad, Gujarat in the month of July 2009. The present study emphasizes the role of early and aggressive treatment with bicarbonate, ethanol and of hemodialysis in patients having significant toxicity.
