Study of Thyroid Profile Estimations by Immunodiagnosis in Rural Population

Padmanabhan P

Abstract :

Thyroid profile involves testing of Thyroid Stimulating Hormone (TSH), Thyroxine (T4) and Triiodothyronine (T3). It enables the diagnosis and prognosis of thyroid patients by clinicians. Hypothyroidism and hyperthyroidisms have distinct clinical symptoms. The present study is undertaken in rural population involving the recent and newer technique of thyroid profile estimation by immunodiagnosis; which utilizes enhanced chemiluminesence for better detection of thyroid diseases. Both out and in-patients of both genders recommended for thyroid profile are used for this present study. The detection technique has good sensitivity. The integrated dual read output mode gives greater accuracy, sensitivity and precision. In the present study frequency of euthyroids are greater than prevalence of thyroid disease in the rural population. Prevalence of thyroid disease is greater amongst the females and out-patients as compared to males and in-patients in the rural population. Factors causing variations in the results should be considered while interpreting the thyroid profile.
