Abstract :

Background & Objective: Acinetobacter, although saprophytic ,the emergence and spread of Acinetobacter as an important uropathpgen in hospital environment is a major area of concern. This study was carried out to know the prevalence of Acinetobacter in urinary tract infection along with their antibiotic susceptibility. Materials and Methods: 35 isolates of Acinetobacter were obtained from mid stream urine samples, and subjected to disc diffusion testing by Kirby Baurer method against various antibiotics. Results: Acinetobacter isolates showed very high resistance (>50%) to ceftazidime, ceftriaxone, cefepime, gentamicin, trimethoprim sulfamethoxazole. Most isolates (>70%) were sensitive to ampicillin–sulbactam, imipenem and piperacillin–tazobactam. 80% of the total isolates of Acinetobacter were resistant to 3 or more group of antibiotics. Conclusion: The multi drug resistance among Acinetobacter isolates are of great clinical importance as they are known for nosocomial  importance which provocates the necessary for the screening of hospital infection control
