A STUDY OF HAEMATOLOGICAL PROFILE IN ALCOHOLICS

Abstract :
<p> <span style="font-family: "Times New Roman", serif; font-size: 12pt;">Introduction</span></p> <p class="MsoNormal" style="line-height:150%"><span style="font-size:12.0pt; line-height:150%;font-family:"Times New Roman",serif">Alcoholism represents one of the social, economic and health problems worldwide. Excessive alcohol consumption affects all major organ system in the body. The effects of alcoholism on haematopoietic system is easily reflected in any of the blood cell lines.<o:p></o:p></span></p> <p class="MsoNormal" style="line-height:150%"><span style="font-size:12.0pt; line-height:150%;font-family:"Times New Roman",serif">Aim<o:p></o:p></span></p> <p class="MsoNormal" style="line-height:150%"><span style="font-size:12.0pt; line-height:150%;font-family:"Times New Roman",serif">A study of haematological profile in alcoholics admitted at a tertiary care hospital in North Karnataka.<o:p></o:p></span></p> <p class="MsoNormal" style="line-height:150%"><span style="font-size:12.0pt; line-height:150%;font-family:"Times New Roman",serif">Methods<o:p></o:p></span></p> <p class="MsoNormal" style="line-height:150%"><span style="font-size:12.0pt; line-height:150%;font-family:"Times New Roman",serif">This study was conducted at S. Nijalingappa medical college and HSK hospital , Bagalkot. This study was a retrospective analysis of haematological profile in alcoholics admitted between June 2016 to March 2017.<o:p></o:p></span></p> <p class="MsoNormal" style="line-height:150%"><span style="font-size:12.0pt; line-height:150%;font-family:"Times New Roman",serif">Materials <o:p></o:p></span></p> <p class="MsoNormal" style="line-height:150%"><span style="font-size:12.0pt; line-height:150%;font-family:"Times New Roman",serif">The haematological profile of 63 individuals was collected who were admitted in the department of general medicine.<o:p></o:p></span></p> <p class="MsoNormal" style="line-height:150%"><span style="font-size:12.0pt; line-height:150%;font-family:"Times New Roman",serif">Results<o:p></o:p></span></p> <p class="MsoNormal" style="line-height:150%"><span style="font-size:12.0pt; line-height:150%;font-family:"Times New Roman",serif">A total of 61 cases included in our study . All subjects were males. Anaemia and thrombocytopenia are frequent manifestations of alcoholism . There may be leucopenia or leucocytosis. The patients of chronic alcoholism are prone for various infections and non communicable diseases like diabetes . <o:p></o:p></span></p> <p class="MsoNormal" style="line-height:150%"><span style="font-size:12.0pt; line-height:150%;font-family:"Times New Roman",serif">Conclusion <o:p></o:p></span></p> <p class="MsoNormal" style="line-height:150%"><span style="font-size:12.0pt; line-height:150%;font-family:"Times New Roman",serif">Alcoholic liver disease affects economically productive age group. It is associated with high morbidity and mortality. The effects are reversible if identified at early stages.<o:p></o:p></span></p>
