Abstract :

Hepatitis C is one of the major communicable diseases and resolve spontaneously but majority of cases (75% to 85% chronic cases), chronic infection progress to liver failure, cirrhosis and hepatocellular carcinoma. The genotypic distribution of HCV in India suggests genotype 3 to be the commonest (61.8%) followed by genotype 1 (31.2%). The present study was carried out to detect the Predominant Risk Factor for Hepatitis C, in anti HCV PCR Positive Patients of tertiary health care centre Kanpur, a central part of UP in northern India. In this study 29.31% of 58/200 HCV PCR positive patients had received varying number of blood transfusions in most prevalent genotype which was type 3, 67.24% cases, followed by type 1 with 29.31% cases. There were only 1.72% cases with a co-infection of type 1 & 3, while genotype 2 was also seen in 1.72% cases. Other major risk factors identified in the study were needle prick, dental procedures, major surgery etc. Study also reaffirmed that transfusion of blood and products between the donors and recipients are the chief sources and factors of HCV transmission in the population and therefore appropriate precautionary measures are paramount in the prevention of the HCV infections, may be reduced by health education and basic hygiene measures aiming at general population and medical personnel. Study will also highlight the importance of blood screening before transfusion in our clinical practice.
