OXACILLIN SCREENING FOR METHICILLIN RESISTANT STAPHYLOCOCCUS AUREUS

Abstract :
<p> </p> <p class="MsoNormal" style="margin-top:0in;margin-right:-1.15pt;margin-bottom: 0in;margin-left:0in;margin-bottom:.0001pt;text-align:justify;line-height:150%"><b style="mso-bidi-font-weight:normal"><span style="mso-bidi-font-size:12.0pt; line-height:150%">Introduction: </span></b><span style="mso-bidi-font-size: 12.0pt;line-height:150%;color:black;background:white">Methicillin resistant staphylococcus aureus (</span><span style="mso-bidi-font-size:12.0pt; line-height:150%">MRSA) is a strain of Staphylococcus <span style="mso-bidi-font-style: italic">aureus </span>that is resistant to a large group of antibiotics<span style="mso-bidi-font-weight:bold">. Study was aim t</span>o screen the isolated S. aureus for Oxacillin resistance by Oxacillin screen agar.<o:p></o:p></span></p> <p class="MsoNormal" style="margin-top:0in;margin-right:-1.15pt;margin-bottom: 0in;margin-left:0in;margin-bottom:.0001pt;text-align:justify;line-height:150%"><b style="mso-bidi-font-weight:normal"><span style="mso-bidi-font-size:12.0pt; line-height:150%">Methods: </span></b><span style="mso-bidi-font-size:12.0pt; line-height:150%">Clinical specimens obtained from patients in various departments of BPKIHS, and submitted to department of Microbiology for culture and sensitivity were included. Among 90 isolated <span style="mso-bidi-font-style: italic">SA was screened by using cefoxitin disc as per Kirby-Bauer’s disc diffusion method. </span><span style="color:black;background:white">MRSA were again screened with the Oxacillin screening agar</span>. <o:p></o:p></span></p> <p class="MsoNormal" style="margin-top:0in;margin-right:-1.15pt;margin-bottom: 0in;margin-left:0in;margin-bottom:.0001pt;text-align:justify;line-height:150%"><b style="mso-bidi-font-weight:normal"><span style="mso-bidi-font-size:12.0pt; line-height:150%">Results<span style="color:black;mso-themecolor:text1">: </span></span></b><span style="mso-bidi-font-size:12.0pt;line-height:150%;color:black;mso-themecolor: text1;background:white">Out of these 90</span><i><span style="mso-bidi-font-size: 12.0pt;line-height:150%;color:black;background:white">; </span></i><span style="mso-bidi-font-size:12.0pt;line-height:150%;color:black;background:white">23(25.56 %) were found to be MRSA and rest 67(74.44%) were Methicillin sensitive staphylococcus </span><span style="mso-bidi-font-size:12.0pt;line-height:150%; color:black;mso-themecolor:text1;background:white">aureus (MSSA)</span><span style="mso-bidi-font-size:12.0pt;line-height:150%;color:black;background:white">. Then the Oxacillin screening test showed that 32 isolates were sensitive to oxacillin (35.55%) while 58 were resistant to oxacillin (64.45%).<o:p></o:p></span></p> <p class="MsoNormal" style="margin-top:0in;margin-right:-1.15pt;margin-bottom: 0in;margin-left:0in;margin-bottom:.0001pt;text-align:justify;line-height:150%"><b style="mso-bidi-font-weight:normal"><span style="mso-bidi-font-size:12.0pt; line-height:150%;color:black;mso-themecolor:text1">Conclusion: </span></b><span style="mso-bidi-font-size:12.0pt;line-height:150%;color:black;mso-themecolor: text1;mso-bidi-font-weight:bold">In this study 26% MRSA was found, which indicated the alarming threats to use the beta lactam antibiotics. </span><b style="mso-bidi-font-weight:normal"><span style="mso-bidi-font-size:12.0pt; line-height:150%;mso-fareast-font-family:"Times New Roman""><o:p></o:p></span></b></p>
