Abstract :
The present study was designed to evaluate the invitro activity of different antifungal agents including azoles against M. furfur isolates from Pityriasis versicolor patients. Antifungal susceptibility was tested using the Sensititre YeastOne–10 method (Trek Diagnostic Systems, East Grinstead, UK), and VITEK 2 system to compare the in vitro activity of antifungal agents; amphotericin B, caspofungin, 5–flucytosine and azoles. The results showed that Posaconazole and Voriconazole were highly active against isolates of M .furfur since all isolates inhibited by 0.06–0.12 µg/ml, 0.03–0.06 µg/ml and good MICs for Fluconazole and Itraconazole which inhibited the isolates by 0.06–0.25µg/mL and 0.12 – 0.25µg/ml respectively. Amphotericin B and caspofungin have high MICs and low in vitro activities against M. furfur isolates, since most isolates were inhibited by 1μg/ml of amphotericin B, 1–8μg /ml of Flucytocine and 2μg/ml of caspofungin. This study indicates that M. furfur strains were susceptible to Itraconazole, Voriconazole, Fluconazole and Posaconazole by the two methods SensititreYeast One and VITEK2 and there was good concordance between the two methods was observed for amphotericin B, fluconazole, voriconazole and 5–flucytosine. The Sensititre YeastOne –10 and VITEK 2 systems seems to be suitable commercial tools for the antifungal susceptibility of Malassezia isolates
