Drug Abuse Practices, Effects and Possible Ways of Eradication Among Secondary School Students In Kano State, Nigeria

Abstract :

The study was designed to determine the drug abuse practices, effects and possible ways of eradication among secondary school students in Kano State, Nigeria. It sought answers to the following research question (1) what are the types of drugs commonly abused by secondary school students in Kano State? (2) What are the factors that lead secondary school students in Kano State, Nigeria to drug abuse practices? (3) What are the effects of drug abuse practices on secondary school students in Kano State, Nigeria? (4) What are the possible ways of eradicating drug abuse practices among secondary school students in Kano State, Nigeria? Descriptive survey research design was adopted. The population of the study was made up of about 28,000 secondary school students in Kano State, Nigeria. The sample was made up of 1,036 JSS III and SS III secondary school students in the study area. Questionnaire was used to collect relevant data. The data collected was analyzed using simple percentages. The study among others revealed eighteen (18) drugs commonly abuse by the subjects, twelve (12) factors that lead to drug abuse practices, eighteen (18) effects of drug abuse practices, and thirteen (13) possible ways of eradicating drug abuse practices among secondary school students in Kano State, Nigeria. Conclusions were made and recommendations were given to include: Drug education should be made an integral part of the school curriculum from senior primary school upwards; parents should give more attention to their children upinging practices as well as know who their children’s friends are; professional bodies should write articles in the newspaper, magazines as well as through radio, television, posters etc on the ills of drug abuse practices.
