PREVALENCEOF MUSCULOSKELETALINJURY AMONGINDIAN BHARATHNATYAMDANCERS

Abstract :

<p>&nbsp;Background:Danceinvolvesvarioustechniquesrequireadopting anti-anatomic positions thatplace stress onthemusculoskeletalsystem.Dancers involvedin differentdancingactivities,placing themselvesatariskofmusculoskeletalinjuries studieshaveshowninjuriesinvariousdanceforms.Bharathnatyambeing theancient dancestyle havelimited studies pertainingto musculoskeletal injuries. Materials andMethods:500professionaldancersfrom20Dancing schoolspresentinHubli- Dharwadwithminimumofthreeyears ofdancingexperiencewere taken.Thegeneral datacollectionformandtheNordicquestionnairewereansweredby thedancersand the data wasanalyzed. Results:&nbsp;&nbsp; PrevalenceofmusculoskeletalinjuriesinBharathnatyamdancerswas foundtobe36.40%withinjuriesmostcommonbeenintheupperback, neck, shoulder,lowback, hip andwristjoint. Whencomparedwithoverallprevalenceof eachproblemthere wasnosignificance inage groups,BMI,years of dancing experience,hoursofdance practice.The prevalence wasfoundto be moreinfemales the differencewassignificant(p&lt;0.05). However, the type of floor onwhichthey practicedancewasassociated to prevalenceof musculoskeletal injuries (p&lt;0.05).Conclusion:Therewas36.40% prevalenceof musculoskeletalinjuriesamong Bharathnatyamdancersandthe prevalencewasfound tobe more infemalesthe differencewassignificantp&lt;0.05.Thetypeofflooronwhichtheypracticedancewas associated to the prevalenceof musculoskeletal injuries.</p>
